Year in Review 2024: COEF

My Favorite Things I Posted Here in 2024

  • “WRITING FACTS”

    Maybe the most cathartic thing I’ve ever written, to the point that I don’t even care that it’s kind of a mess. Secretly, my favorite part is the slideshow about how to make a mix, it’s the part I worked the hardest on and even though it’s framed as joke it’s actually 100% serious. Oh, and the title is a nod to one of my favorite episodes of Imaginary Advice, “HORSE FACTS,” which uses a similar fragmentary style (though is a little bit more coherent).

    Anyway I’ve had a pretty rough last month-and-a-half, so keep an eye out for the sequel.

Pretty self-explanatory.

  • “Experiments in Logo, Part 1: Logoing Through the Motions”

    The big reason why I didn’t end up doing that much writing last year even after I’d started to recover from my injury is that I got sucked into experimenting with two different programming languages, Logo and AppleScript. The AppleScript stuff will probably never get a write-up because I’ve largely just been making tools for myself, like a list randomizer to replace fluky.io (whose limitations had started to bother me). Maybe I’ll do a write-up on the Music Trivia script I’ve been working on for months (I’ve been documenting it live over on Bluesky but it’s not exactly organized in an easy-to-read way).

    Anyway, I’d originally thought I’d just post the Logo art on its own with minimal explanation, and figured Instagram would be good for that. It turns out Instagram isn’t good for that. Maybe it’s not good for anything. So I deleted my account about 20 minutes after making it. It then occurred to me that really there was no reason why I couldn’t post the images on here. When I made this site I’d decided I was going to limit it to just my writing, but why? The logic behind posting my Logo art here is exactly the same: I’ve made some art, I want people to see it, there’s nowhere else for it to go.

    But, since I was posting in a primarily text-based context it made sense to include some writing along with, and I really enjoyed writing this one. The later ones I ended up not having as much to say, but that’s ok because the art is better.

    And now that I’ve established I’m allowed to post visual art on here, I’ll probably do some write-ups of my photography at some point, so keep an eye out for those.

* * *

I mean, I could basically just copy and paste the “Christmas letter” section from last year and change a few words (under the circumstances my coping mechanisms were a little more passive this year). It has been even more of A Year than last year, but I’m getting my health issues under control so I’m hoping this year will actually be productive (knock on all the wood). Of course, the general apocalyptic vibes might get in the way.

Oh, and I’ve started doing Best Of threads of my Bluesky posts as well, if you’re interested. It’s roughly 50% pontificating, 50% stupid jokes.
